All parents want their children to be healthy, fit and happy.
However, very few kids are actually healthy, because just a few parents are aware of the health definition for kids. It starts from learning the benefits of being healthy, knowing what healthy weight is, and knowing more about physical activity and eating right. Without wasting any time let us straight away get to learn how we can help our children stay healthy and fit.
1. Physical activity is important
Regular physical activity is very important to help your kids stay healthy.Encourage your kids to stay active from an early age, as habits that kids develop in early years is likely to stay with them forever. Regular physical activity helps your kids and teens build strong muscles and bones, grow healthily, develop and maintain flexibility, improve cardiovascular fitness, reduce stress, and improve posture.
2. Choose the right drink
Water is the best drink for adults and kids alike. It contains no sugar that is present in sports drinks, soft drinks, flavored mineral water, and also packaged juices. Encourage your kids to drink water whenever they feel thirsty. Milk is also a very nutritious drink for children and a great source of calcium, which helps develop strong teeth and bones.
Children over 2 years of age should drink reduced fat milk, as it offers the same nutrients like full cream milk but is lower in unhealthy saturated fats. Soft drinks, flavored mineral water, sports drink, and cordials should be avoided.
3. Eat lots of veggies and fruits
Make sure your kids eat different colored veggies and fruits every day – both cooked and raw. Whole fruits do have some natural sugars that make it sweet, and it also has lots of minerals, fiber, and vitamins that make it more nutritious and filling than a glass of juice. So eating fruits is a better and healthier option than drinking juice. Children might need to try new veggies and fruits at least 10 times before they start developing a taste, so be patient, and keep offering them.
4. Eat fewer snacks and select healthy alternatives
By offering healthy snacks to your teens and kids in between meals, you can help them meet their everyday nutritional needs. Health definition for kids states that children have smaller stomachs compared to adults, and so they need to eat every few hours to get the necessary amount of nutrients, and to keep their energy levels high.
The in-between meal snacks that you offer your kids should comprise of veggies and fruits, whole grains, and reduced-fat dairy products. Limit snacks that are rich in salt, sugar, or saturated fats. Do not completely ban snacks like chocolate, cakes and chips, but instead offer them occasionally, this will keep both you and your children happy.
